Basic Life Support (BLS): Adult Algorithm At MCMC

Check pulse
At carotid artery

Compression landmarks:

Lower half of sternum between the nipples

Compression method:

Heel of one hand, other hand on top

Depth:

At least 2 inches (5cm) no more than 2.4 inches for adults

Allow complete:

Chest recoil after each compression

Compression rate:

At least 100 time per minute (100-120)

Compression-to-ventilations ratio:

30 to 2

Continuous compressions if:

Advanced airway present (ET Tube)

Rotate compressor every:

2 minutes

Minimize interruptions in compressions to less than

10 seconds

Avoid:

Excessive ventilation

If end-tidal carbon dioxide tension (PETCO2) less than 10 mm Hg

Attempt to improve CPR quality ( 20 mm Hg or more indicates a perfusing blood flow).

If diastolic pressure less than 20 mm Hg:

Attempt to improve CPR quality

Head

Head tilted, chin lifted

If trauma suspected

Jaw thrust if trauma suspected

Ventilation with advanced airway

Ventilation with advanced airway every 6 seconds asynchronous with compressions

Rescue breathing

Rescue breathing every 5-6 seconds If pulse is present without breathing

Delivery speed

Deliver at about 1 second per breath

Watch for

Watch for visible chest rise

Attach and use

Attach and use Defibrillator or AED as soon as available

Minimize interruptions

Minimize interruptions in chest compressions before and after shock
.

Resume CPR immediately

Resume CPR beginning with compressions immediately after each shock
During the code, the Recorder reminds the code team leader every 2 min. check pulse, check rhythm, and switch compressors

1) Power ON the AED: this activates voice prompts for guidance in all steps

2) Attach electrode pads to victim’s bare chest

3) Clear the victim and the AED will analyze the rhythm

- Be sure no one is touching the victim

- The AED then tells you if a shock is needed

4) If the AED advises a shock

- Make sure no one is in contact with the victim

- Press the shock button

5) As soon as the AED gives the shock, immediately resume CPR, starting with chest compressions
